Interstitial Cystitis (IN-ter-STISH-ul sis-TY-tis) - also known as IC or Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS) - is a chronic, yet treatable, inflammatory condition of the bladder that affects both women
and men. Current estimates suggest there may be almost 2 million Americans suffering from IC. Average age of onset is 40, twenty five percent are under the age of 30 and ninety percent are women.
 IC is a chronic inflammatory condition of the bladder wall which frequently goes undiagnosed. Inside the bladder, there is a mucous layer that lines and protects
the bladder wall. When someone has IC, the mucous layer is believed to be damaged, which may allow irritating substances in the urine to aggravate and inflame the bladder wall, resulting
in pain.
It appears that IC has an as yet unexplained association with certain other chronic diseases and pain syndromes such as endometriosis, irritable bowel syndrome,
vulvar vestibulitis, migraine headaches and fibromyalgia.

Dr. Melissa Delgado treats Interstitial Cystitis through Blue Ridge OB/Gyn, located in Culpeper,
Virginia. She joined Blue Ridge OB/Gyn in 2006. She grew up in New York and has been living in Virginia since 2000. She attended medical school in Guadalajara, Mexico and then New York Medical College.
She completed her residency at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, VA. She additionally received her certification to practice acupuncture in 2007. She spent two years in private
practice in Reston, Virginia prior to moving to Culpeper. She has special interests in chronic pelvic pain and the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis and interstitial
cystitis.
She is also specialized in advanced laparoscopic surgery. In addition, Dr. Delgado has added medical acupuncture as an alternative treatment
(treatments take place at MedSpa of Virginia) for a variety of conditions in the area of obstetrics, gynecology, pelvic pain, and women's health.
She enjoys music, riding horses, travel, scuba diving, photography, and spending time with her family. |
